3G bid of Belarusian mobile companies MTS, Velcom approved

21.10.2009 13:23

MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – The working group for the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF) under the Belarus Security Council supported the initiative of the Information Technologies and Communications Ministry to allocate UMTS (3G) radio bands to mobile companies MTS and Velcom (5MHz each) on 15 October 2009, BelTA learned from Sergei Novikov, Head of the Regulation Department of the Information Technologies and Communications Ministry.

The SCRF’s next session is supposed to make the final decision by the end of the year.

Third-generation cellular communication expands data capabilities of UMTS and HDSPA-based mobile networks. 3G standards are supposed to enable high-speed data transfer, allowing subscribers to make video calls, watch TV, and use broadband Internet access.

BelTA reported earlier that the State Commission for Radio Frequencies made the decision on allocating 3G frequencies to the mobile company BeST on 23 July 2009.
