MINSK, 10 July (BelTA) – In line with the Phytodrugs national programme the enterprises of the Belbiopharm concern are to produce six new drugs based on native herbs, BelTA learnt from the concern.
In 2009 the Dialek company is to launch the production of combined sedative Sedanol, anti-inflammatory drug Komprotex and a combined sedative expectorant based on creeping valerian and licorice.
The Belmedpreparaty company continues developing and introducing the technology of commercial production of Bienosilim hepaprotector, antiparasitic creams, antioxidants and antiallergenic drugs.
Phytodrugs are produced by Borisov Pharmaceutical Plant, Dialek, Belmedpreparaty, Ekzon and Izotron. The annual demand for plant material is about 200-250 tonnes. Belarusian enterprises totally satisfy the demand of national pharmaceutical companies for such herbs as valerian, chamomile, and marigold.
All in all, over 300 descriptions of phytodrugs have been registered in Belarus. Most of the plant materials used in these medicines are imported. Production of phytodrugs is not among the priority avenues of the domestic pharmaceutical industry so far.
Herbs are used in medicine to treat a wide range of diseases. Medicines based on plant materials account for about 40% of all drugs and are becoming increasingly popular.
The Phytodrugs programme designed for 2005-2010 envisages the expansion of production and processing of medicinal and culinary herbs. The programme consists of four major segments: cultivation of medicinal and culinary herbs, production of phytodrugs based on plant materials, development and production of food fortified with herbal supplements and scientific support of the programme.
